# arXiv API: Search papers

> Finds arXiv preprints by topic or title words, with optional author, subject, submission date range and sorting. Returns up to 100 papers with abstracts, subjects, dates and links.

Unofficial. Not affiliated with or endorsed by arXiv.

- Page: https://fous.com/methods/arxiv.org/search-papers
- Method: `arxiv.org/search_papers`, version 1
- Website: arxiv.org
- Returns: title, authors, abstract, subjects, submitted and updated dates, PDF and abstract links, arXiv number
- Effect: read (it gets data and changes nothing)
- Sign-in: none needed
- Cost: 1 credit per completed run (1¢ with pay as you go); failed runs are free
- Verified: Nov 2, 2026

## Inputs

| Field | Type | Required | In the run below | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| `sort` | string | no | | Sort by relevance or newest first, for example "newest". One of "relevance", "newest". Default "relevance". |
| `query` | string | yes | `"diffusion models"` | Topic or title words to find, for example "diffusion models". |
| `author` | string | no | | Author name to narrow results, for example "Jonathan Ho". |
| `subject` | string | no | | arXiv subject in plain words, for example "machine learning". |
| `end_date` | string | no | | First submission date on or before this day, for example "2023-12-31". |
| `start_date` | string | no | | First submission date on or after this day, for example "2020-01-01". |
| `max_results` | integer | no |  | Maximum number of papers to return, for example 20. Default 20. |

## Run it

From code, with a Fous API key in `FOUS_API_KEY`; the answer's `data` holds the output:

```bash
curl https://api.fous.com/v1/runs \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FOUS_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"method":"arxiv.org/search_papers","input":{"query":"diffusion models"}}'
```

From an AI agent connected to the Fous MCP server: its `run` with the same method and input. To connect one, give it `set up https://fous.com/SKILL.md`.

## Ask your agent

- Find recent preprints on diffusion models submitted in 2023, sorted newest first
- Search arXiv for papers by Jonathan Ho about generative models
- Show me up to 50 machine learning papers mentioning transformer attention from 2021 to 2022
- Look up preprints titled with graph neural networks for molecular property prediction
- Find papers on reinforcement learning from human feedback, most relevant first, limit 10
