# bioRxiv API

> bioRxiv returns bioRxiv and medRxiv preprint data as a workflow and API.

Search preprints finds bioRxiv and medRxiv preprints matching topic words in titles, abstracts, and subject categories. Provide topic words and optionally a server, posting date range, and result limit; results appear newest first, with journal details when available.

## Methods

### Search preprints

Operation `search_preprints`, version 1. 1 credit per call.

Find bioRxiv and medRxiv preprints matching topic words within a posting date range, newest first. Published journal details appear when available.

**Input**

| Field | Type | Required | Example | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| `query` | string | yes | `"breast cancer"` | Topic words to find in preprint titles, abstracts, and subject categories, for example gut microbiome depression. |
| `server` | string | no | `"medrxiv"` | Preprint server to search, for example both. |
| `end_date` | string | no | `"2026-09-28"` | Last posting date, inclusive, for example 2026-09-29. Defaults to today. |
| `start_date` | string | no | `"2026-09-27"` | First posting date, inclusive, for example 2026-09-01. Defaults to 30 days before today. |
| `max_results` | integer | no | `5` | Maximum number of matching preprints, for example 20. |

## Quick start

Call the API with a Fous API key (`FOUS_API_KEY`). To create one, turn on Developer mode in Fous Studio, then open Keys & connections → API keys (https://app.fous.com/keys).

```bash
# First set your key: export FOUS_API_KEY='YOUR_FOUS_API_KEY'
: "${FOUS_API_KEY:?Set FOUS_API_KEY before running this example}"
curl 'https://api.fous.com/v1/query' \
  --fail-with-body --silent --show-error --max-time 120 \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FOUS_API_KEY" \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  --data-raw '{
    "start_date": "2026-09-27",
    "max_results": 5
  },
  "response": {
```python

console.log(result.data.output);
```
Or describe the data in plain language: send `{"api":"@biorxiv","prompt":"Describe the data you need, with every detail"}` to the same URL. Fous fills in the input, runs the method that fits and returns only the fields you asked for; `data.route.calls[].request` is the exact call it made. Routing is free; the run costs the same.
## Use cases
- Track new preprints on a research topic
- Review preprint abstracts and author lists
- Find preprints by posting date and subject area
- Identify preprints with published journal details
## FAQ
### Is Fous affiliated with bioRxiv?
No. Fous is not affiliated with bioRxiv. This workflow reads the public biorxiv.org website and returns its data.
### How much does it cost?
Each run costs 1 credit. With pay-as-you-go, a credit costs 1¢; monthly plans cost less per credit.
### Do I need a bioRxiv account?
No. You only need a Fous account.
### How current is the data?
Fous gets the data from biorxiv.org when you run it; repeating the same request within a day may return the saved result. Fous checks this workflow automatically; it last passed a check on Sep 29, 2026.
### Which preprints match my research topic?
Search preprints finds preprints matching topic words in titles, abstracts, and subject categories.
### When was a preprint posted?
Search preprints returns the posting date for each matching version.
### Has a preprint been published in a journal?
Search preprints includes journal details and a journal article link when available.
