# Open Charge Map API

> Open Charge Map returns charging location data and is available as a workflow and API.

Open Charge Map, also called OpenChargeMap or OCM, returns nearby charging locations, ordered nearest first. Search chargers needs an address, city, or postcode; optional filters include connector, radius, maximum results, and minimum power.

## Methods

### Search chargers

Operation `search_chargers`, version 1. 1 credit per call.

Find Open Charge Map charging locations near an address, city, or postcode, nearest first. Unreported point counts, connector counts, operating status, and verification dates are left blank.

**Input**

| Field | Type | Required | Example | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| `location` | string | yes | `"New York, NY"` | Address, city, or postcode near which to search, for example Oxford, UK. |
| `connector` | string | no | `"CCS"` | Connector to require, for example CCS; any accepts all. |
| `radius_km` | number | no | `5` | Search radius in kilometres, for example 10 (maximum 100). |
| `max_results` | integer | no | `5` | Maximum number of locations, for example 20 (maximum 100). |
| `min_power_kw` | number | no | `50` | Minimum power in kW for a matching connector, for example 50; 0 accepts any power. |

## Quick start

Call the API with a Fous API key (`FOUS_API_KEY`). To create one, turn on Developer mode in Fous Studio, then open Keys & connections → API keys (https://app.fous.com/keys).

```bash
# First set your key: export FOUS_API_KEY='YOUR_FOUS_API_KEY'
: "${FOUS_API_KEY:?Set FOUS_API_KEY before running this example}"
curl 'https://api.fous.com/v1/query' \
  --fail-with-body --silent --show-error --max-time 120 \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FOUS_API_KEY" \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  --data-raw '{
  "api": "@open-charge-map",
  "visibility": "public",
  "operation": "search_chargers",
  "version": 1,
  "input": {
    "location": "New York, NY",
    "connector": "CCS",
    "radius_km": 5,
    "max_results": 5,
    "min_power_kw": 50
  },
  "response": {
    "format": "json"
  }
}'
```

```python
# Save as fous.py and run with python3 fous.py. No packages needed.
# First set your key: export FOUS_API_KEY='YOUR_FOUS_API_KEY'
import json
import os
import urllib.error
import urllib.request
```typescript

// First set your key: export FOUS_API_KEY='YOUR_FOUS_API_KEY'
const apiKey = process.env.FOUS_API_KEY;

const result: ApiResult = await response.json();
if (!response.ok || result.success === false) {
  throw new Error(result.error?.message ?? `HTTP ${response.status}`);
}
if (!result.data) throw new Error("Missing API response data");
console.log(result.data.output);
```
Or describe the data in plain language: send `{"api":"@open-charge-map","prompt":"Describe the data you need, with every detail"}` to the same URL. Fous fills in the input, runs the method that fits and returns only the fields you asked for; `data.route.calls[].request` is the exact call it made. Routing is free; the run costs the same.
## Use cases
- Find charging locations near a planned stop
- Compare charger distance, connectors, and power
- Check a location’s operator and access details
- Review reported operating status and verification dates
## FAQ
### Is Fous affiliated with Open Charge Map?
No. Fous is not affiliated with Open Charge Map. This workflow reads the public openchargemap.org website and returns its data.
### How much does it cost?
Each run costs 1 credit. With pay-as-you-go, a credit costs 1¢; monthly plans cost less per credit.
### Do I need a Open Charge Map account?
No. You only need a Fous account.
### How current is the data?
Fous gets the data from openchargemap.org when you run it; repeating the same request within a day may return the saved result. Fous checks this workflow automatically; it last passed a check on Sep 29, 2026.
### What charging locations are near an address or city?
Search chargers returns nearby locations ordered by distance, with address, town, distance, and map details.
### Which nearby chargers have a particular connector?
Search chargers can filter locations by connector and minimum power.
### What is reported about a charger’s status?
Search chargers returns operating status and last verified date when reported; unreported values are left blank.
