Planets of the Solar System: Tilts and Spins
Sep 14, 2025
videoHow does your favorite planet spin? Does it spin rapidly around a nearly vertical axis, or horizontally, or backwards? The featured video animates NASA images of all eight planets in our Solar System to show them spinning side-by-side for an easy comparison. In the time-lapse video , a day on Earth -- one Earth rotation -- takes just a few seconds. Jupiter rotates the fastest, while Venus spins not only the slowest (can you see it?), but backwards. The inner rocky planets across the top underwent dramatic spin-altering collisions during the early days of the Solar System. Why planets spin and tilt as they do remains a topic of research with much insight gained from modern computer modeling and the recent discovery and analysis of hundreds of exoplanets : planets orbiting other stars .

About the NASA tool
NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) returns dated astronomy pictures when you provide a date, or uses today by default.
Search images finds photos, videos, or audio using required search words and optional year and media filters.
List near earth asteroids, List natural events, and Get iss sightings return approaches, events, and city sightings using dates, filters, or a city.
Built from nasa.gov, apod.nasa.gov, eonet.gsfc.nasa.gov and nominatim.openstreetmap.org. Last checked Oct 8, 2026.

Questions about NASA
Can I run it with my own inputs?
Yes. Change the inputs in Studio and press Run, or send new inputs from your code, or ask a connected AI assistant.
Can I call this NASA tool as an API?
Yes. Send a POST request to /v1/query with your Fous API key and the inputs, and get JSON back.
How much does it cost?
Each completed run costs 1 credit. Failed runs without a completed receipt are free; completed work can remain charged if delivery is interrupted. With pay as you go, a credit costs 1¢. Monthly plans cost less per credit.
Do I need a NASA account?
No. You only need a Fous account.
How current is the data?
Fous gets the data from nasa.gov when you run it. Some results are reused for up to 24 hours, and results that use your account or key are never reused. It was last verified on Oct 8, 2026.
What is NASA’s astronomy picture for a date?
Get astronomy picture of the day returns the picture title, explanation, media links, and credits for the date you provide.
Which asteroids will approach Earth during a date range?
List near earth asteroids returns matching approaches, closest approach times, distances, speeds, size ranges, and hazard status.
When can I see the ISS from my city?
Get iss sightings returns upcoming sightings for a city, including local start times, visibility duration, and sky directions.
